One of my colleagues told me that one of the ways we can encourage parents to participate is to give them printouts of the songs and rhymes we use. This way, they can participate with the child beside them, or on their lap, and the handout close by. Here are the ones we used for this storytime:

Sweet Potato and Corn Soup for a Blustery Winter Day

Yesterday, we had about 20 cm of snow. It felt a bit more than that, especially since it was dropping at a pretty fast rate. After shovelling the backyard porch area, the front yard, and then the neighbour's front yard, I felt a bit chilled and cramped, and mighty hungry!

My dad used to cook this awesome corn soup with egg and imitation crab (I know, imitation-anything doesn't sound as good as its real counterpart, but when you're a kid, you pretty much shovel down anything that tastes even a smidgin' good -- not that my dad's soup was bad, mind you :D).

Knotted Open Work Knitting for My Mama!

Variegated colour yarns are pretty awesome when doing knotted open work knitting. The above pattern is from The Weekly Stitch, except I did mine in a different order:

Cast on 30 stitches.

Row 1: Purl
Row 2: K2, (YO, K3, then pass the first stitch over the second and third stitches)*, repeat from * to last stitch, K1
Row 3: Purl
Row 4: K1, (K3, then pass the first stitch over the second and third stitches, YO)*, repeat from * to last stitch, K2

Repeat these four rows until desired length.

Love You Ninong!!

An ode to a loving ninong whose kindness and humility have grounded my outlook towards life. You have been and will always be a great source of strength and inspiration. Love you and will always miss you!!

Here are additional notes written afterward...

Death is a strange subject.

After all, it took me more than two months to finally gather my thoughts to write something! My ninong died back in the Philippines on November 12, one day after Remembrance Day, which is ironic because I'm not sure if the day itself will ever stick in my head...? Not because I don't want to remember, but more because the idea of my ninong being gone is still unreal.
